Persepolis

Those of you familiar with Marjane Satrapi's gorgeous and poignant comic books will no doubt be, as I am, extremely eager to see how these intimate portrayals of life as an outsider translate to the big screen. However on the evidence here in the film's soundtrack composed by Oliver Bernet, at the very least the music sums up her moods and feelings perfectly. A fitting blend of Eastern and Western musical forms, from the sleazy 'Teheran Disco' to the swooping strings of 'Manifestation' there is a sense that we are trapped in-between worlds, a sense that is absolutely aligned with Satrapi's wonderful graphic novels. She is an outsider looking in with humour, grace and mixed emotions, and to translate those feelings to music is a difficult prospect met with a level head by Bernet. With a lightness to his production style which gives the songs an almost lo-fi charm at times this carries the humour of the source material, even when the themes are darker and more melancholy. Lovely indeed.
